4.1 – Identify strategies to support inclusive student participation and engagement in classroom activities.
I believe that one of the goals of any teacher should be to create a safe and supportive learning environment. One way in which teachers can promote these environments is through strategies that support student participation and engagement in classroom activities.
I believe that all students should be provided with the opportunity and resources to fully participate in the classroom activities, so that they can learn to their full potential. To fully include all students in classroom activities it is important that teachers understand their students’ needs and level of ability.
Throughout my teaching career I aim to include all students in any given activity and support students to convey their knowledge of topics being covered in class as well as in topics that interest them. I will aim to give them confidence and support to convey ideas and opinions.
To support student participation in my class, I aim to provide active learning strategies that make the classroom an energetic, ever changing environment in which students have a voice and they can make decisions about their own learning. I will provide a safe environment that allows students to actively negotiate, give and take, share, problem solve, compromise and cooperate by teaching students the basic skills of co-operation, participation, communication, validation and support and being a good team member.
4.2- Demonstrate the capacity to organise classroom activities and provide clear directions.
To be a successful teacher organisation is an important key. In my classroom, I will aim to create an organised classroom that offers students space and easy access to resources. My classroom will provide organised areas for student’s workbooks and work samples, as well as areas that detail instructions and explanations of topics that offer visual and written cues.
By having an organised classroom, lessons can run effectively and saves time that can be used for teaching and learning. I believe that it is essential that teacher are organised and prepared to teach students. Having a plan for classroom activities also ensures that the lessons are managed well in the following areas; resource distribution, timing, grouping/seating etc.
Being organised also allows teachers to deliver clear and consistent directions to students that are free from ambiguity. Clear directions promote student success and a well-managed classroom.
I aim to continue developing skills in classroom organisation and lesson preparation that guarantees classroom activities are well-managed to ensure successful and meaning full teaching and learning.
4.3- Demonstrate knowledge of practical approaches to manage challenging behaviour.
During my university studies and employment in Early Childhood,Out of School Hours Care, and Primary Schools I have developed an understanding of the importance of positive interactions between a whole school community.
I believe that these positive interactions can be established if students are exposed to clear and high expectations of what behaviour is required to be a safe, caring and respectful learner. In establishing these high expectations, I believe that it is essential that the school, teachers and students work together to establish rules that will ensure the safety of students and allow them to be effective learners.
I am under the belief that rules and responsibilities should be worded in positive ways, focusing on what students should be doing instead of what they shouldn’t be doing.
I understand the research surrounding positive guidance and its use of positive language and interactions to guide student’s behaviour, and aim to implement this research in the classroom. I also believe that it is important to be consistent with managing challenging behaviour so the classroom is fair to all students.
Through practicums, I have been exposed to ideas of positive reinforcement on individual and whole class levels, which have worked well in managing challenging behaviour.
I am under the belief that by creating engaging lessons that meet the needs of students is very important in combating challenging behaviour, as it is through these types of lessons that students are more interested and willing to learn.
4.4 – Describe strategies that support students’ well-being and safety working within school and/or system, curriculum and legislative requirements.
As a teacher we have a duty of care to provide and maintain safe learning environments. Safe learning environments include each student’s physical and emotional safety.
To maintain these safe environments, classroom teachers need to follow the policies and procedures put in place by the Department of Education and the school. Teachers also need to ensure that students understand these policies in language that they can understand, for example part of a student safety policy might be sun safety and students would need to understand that if they do not have a hat they need to play in the shade and why this is necessary.
I believe there needs to be rules of safety that are clear, direct and easily understood and that materials in the environment must be safe, age appropriate and accessible. In addition, the way the teacher sets up the learning environment should be free from hazards and ensures the safety of all in the room.
Emotional safety is also important and I aim to provide an environment that is emotionally safe by ensuring that students are supported in positive and respectful ways to achieve to the best of their ability. I will endeavour to provide students with a caring environment where they can be heard and respected by myself and their peers and all their needs addressed to the best of my ability.
I aim to continue to familiarise myself with legislative requirements, so that I can provide my students with an environment that supports their well-being and safety.
4.5 – Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching.
ICT is a growing medium in schools throughout Australia and the world. With this increase in technology also comes an increase in safety issues. It is necessary that when using technology in the classroom teachers are aware of the safety issues and do not expose students to harmful material. To ensure that they are not exposed teachers need to implement strategies such as; screening content before showing students, blocking inappropriate websites or applications and consistent vigilance when students are working independently with technology.
One of the most important strategies that teachers can implement is teaching students how to be safe and responsible users of technology. It is necessary that students develop critical awareness when it comes to ICTs so they themselves can be safe and responsible when using ICT. This is becoming even more necessary with the increase in cyber bullying. Students should be aware of the risks of giving out personal information over the internet.
Teachers should also be aware of the ethical issues associated with using ICTs in the classroom. Ethical issues include ensuring that all students have fair access to the ICTs used. This may mean implementing rotations so that all students are able to use the technology. It is also important to remember that not all students will have access to technology out of school which can inhibit their ability fulfill homework assignments. Teachers also need to look at the effects on the environment when using ICTs.
