7.1 – Understand and apply the key principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession.
Through my studies I have become aware of the code of conduct for teachers and the code of ethics. I understand that these documents are used to guide teacher’s professional actions. They provide a standard in which all employees of the Department of Education and Communities must abide by. These documents are also used to provide teachers with practical assistance when they are faced with ethical and professional decisions.
I understand that the code of conduct covers broad range of areas that a teacher must follow including; professional and appropriate behaviour, discrimination, harassment and workplace safety and information protection and public comment among many other necessary areas.
The code of conduct and code of ethics is there to protect the safety of staff and students in the education setting.
I will continue to revise my knowledge of the code of ethics and conduct throughout my career and apply the principles in my classroom by; engaging in professional and personal conduct that upholds the reputation of the department, apply the department’s policies and procedures, act ethically and responsibly and be accountable for my own actions and decisions.
7.2 – Understand the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes required for teachers according to school stage.
I understand that working in Education there are a vast number of legislative, administrative and organisational requirements that teachers must adhere too.
These requirements are put in place to ensure that all staff working for the Department of Education and Communities is following the same policies and procedures and that every employee knows their rights and responsibilities.
These policies are written and published by the Department of Education and Communities as well as individual schools producing their own policies that meet the needs of particular schools.
Throughout my teaching career I will keep up to date with all current legislative, administrative and organisational requirements and implement them in my classroom.
7.3 – Understand strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers.
Parents and carers are the first educators in a student’s life; therefore they know their child best and can provide valuable information about students in the class. Teachers need to work with parents and carers to develop an understanding of the children in their care; their background, culture, interests and development.
It is important that trusting, respectful and warm relationships are developed between teachers and parents and carers as this understanding allows for a more effective learning environment and programs. To do this open communication is necessary and their needs to be sensitivity to parents/carers concerns and ideas.
For warm and respectful relationships to form, teachers need to initiate strategies to promote parent and carer engagement in school life which can include; volunteering for reading groups, canteen volunteer, excursion supervision, guest speaking about topics relevant to the parents skills and curriculum area, sport coaching and collaborating on individual education plans.
Through employment in Early Childhood and Out of School Hours Care, I have developed my abilities in working effectively, sensitively and confidently with parents/carers and will continue to improve my skills and strategies in this area throughout my career.
7.4 – Understand the role of external professional and community representatives in broadening teachers’ professional knowledge and practice.
Throughout my university studies and employment in Early Childhood and Out of School Hours care, I have developed an understanding of the number of different community and external organisations that work with school staff to assist in the education of students and to broaden teacher’s professional knowledge and practice.
Through working in an Early Childhood setting I often attended staff meetings where professionals from the community came in to broaden our understanding of topics such as speech therapy, manual handling, OHS, play spaces and occupational therapy. Through working as a support worker for a boy with special needs, I also developed an understanding of early intervention services.
Through my studies I have also developed understandings of organisations such as kids safe, which offer training and resources for professional development and for teaching.
Throughout my teaching career, I will continue to utilise community services and external professionals to improve and broaden my professional knowledge and practice as well as take part in community events to be an advocate for the field of education.
