6.1 – Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the National Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying professional learning needs.
The National Professional Standards for Teachers provide teachers with focus areas that are essential to quality teaching and learning. As teachers reflect on their practice based on the National Standards, they are able to identify areas in which they need to improve their practice through undertaking professional learning.
As I have been undertaking the construction of my teaching portfolio and through studying a Bachelor of Education: Early Childhood and Primary, I have developed knowledge of the National Professional Standards for teachers. I have discovered how these play a part in accreditation and professional learning needs.
Through the construction of my teaching portfolio I have read about the requirements under the National Professional Standards for Teachers the graduate and higher levels. This understanding has assisted in identifying my professional learning needs.
I have identified many areas in which I would like to further my knowledge such as, relationships with families, assessment, differentiation and inclusion, behaviour management, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education and incorporating technology into the classroom.
Attached are the National Professional Standards for Teachers focus areas in which I have identified as professional learning needs and plans for professional development to improve my knowledge and understanding in these areas.
6.2 – Understand the relevant and appropriate sources of professional learning for teachers
Through my studies I have developed knowledge of appropriate sources of professional learning which include; seminars and workshops run by the Department of Education, Teacher Federation approved courses, Australian Institute of Teachers, Journals, University courses (undergraduate and post graduate), TAFE courses and research publications.
Through this knowledge and by identifying my professional learning needs, I have researched relevant courses to engage in professional learning.
I have begun undertaking post graduate study through Charles Sturt University, studying a Graduate Certificate in Inclusive Education. This graduate certificate meets my professional learning needs of improving my ability to differentiate the curriculum and provide an inclusive classroom setting.
I have also planned to further my learning in this area by undertaking a master’s degree in inclusive education in 2014.
I have attended online workshops in behaviour management and have also begun researching ways to better include technology in classroom activities.
While on my final practicum, I aim to develop knowledge in the areas I have stated as professional learning needs and speak to my associate teacher about possible avenues for furthering my understanding and knowledge in these areas.

It is necessary to ask teaching colleagues for advice and feedback and using this feedback to better improve your teaching practice, so that students can be taught by a high quality teacher.
Through my studies I have taken the feedback from university lecturers based on assignments and course work and implemented this when out on practicum. I have also sought after feedback from my associate teachers on practicum on ways to improve my practice. I have taken all feedback on board and attempted to make changes to my practice to reflect this feedback.
I will continue to seek out feedback from academic professionals, supervisors and colleagues to improve my teaching practice.

Learning is a lifelong process and does not stop once one graduates. To be an effective teacher I believe that it is essential that teachers continue to engage in professional development so that they can develop their knowledge in all curriculum and pedagogical areas to provide the best teaching and learning environment for students.
There is consistently growing research and development in the field of education. This includes new ideas about how children learn, pedagogical strategies, technology advancement and legislative requirements. This research allows teachers and schools to implement programs that provide the best results for students.
By teachers undertaking professional development teachers are able to implement programs that effectively teach students, by meeting all their needs. A teacher who undergoes professional development also demonstrates to their students’ the importance of continual learning.
Throughout my career I will continue to undergo professional learning and implement the findings into my classroom practice to ensure that I am delivering the best teaching program I can.
